The Star That Fell at the End of the World
A bedtime story for children, and the big special episode of the Tom the Pirate season. That morning the Royal Sardine takes on board not two sailors but four: Tom has invited his two best friends. Alban is quick, climbs everywhere and throws everything. Marceau is gentler, and notices what nobody else looks at. Just time to meet Moustache, the round octopus who lives in the teapot, and to open the chest of nineteen keepsakes, before a map folded by a child's hand lands on deck. It is signed by a little girl. Every evening she makes her wish on the same star, the one right at the bottom of the sky. Last night she watched it slide and fall into the sea, and now there is a hole in the sky. On the Royal Sardine, maps are sung rather than read, and this one sings: sail straight ahead to where the blue stops, the star has fallen in the water, take her back to her party. Course set for the End of the World. At the End of the World the dark is thick: that corner of the sea is the one the star used to light up. Marceau is the one who spots a small trembling glow under the water: Étincelle, no bigger than a child's hand, very pale and almost out. The first idea comes to nothing. Alban climbs to the crow's nest and throws her at the sky with all his strength, and she falls straight back with a sad little plop. Then Moustache, frightened of the dark, lets go of his cloud of ink. Dark on top of dark. So Tom stops everything and asks the right question. Why can Étincelle not go back up? Because she has already fallen once and is afraid of falling again, and because she thinks she has turned too pale for the sky to want her. Marceau promises her that her place is still up there, black and empty, waiting, and that a star is never replaced. Then Moustache's ink, the thing that spoils everything, becomes the loveliest night sky in the world. Against that velvet black she dares to shine at last, and she rises all on her own. Twentieth keepsake: a pinch of stardust. Written for the bedtime routine, this longer episode brings two new friends into Tom's world and leaves your child a reassuring idea. To help somebody, going fast and alone is not enough: better to go slowly and together. And what you take for your own flaw, like Moustache's ink, can be exactly what others needed.
