Granny Coquille's Cake Recipe
The map that arrives this evening smells of warm cake, and its letters wobble a little. It comes from Granny Coquille, the oldest and wisest turtle in the sea, whose shell carries a seashell for each thing she has learned. She has forgotten something important: a treasure hidden not at the bottom of the sea, but somewhere inside her own head. Tomorrow is the smallest baby turtle's very first birthday, and for a hundred years it has been Granny who bakes the big cake everybody looks forward to. Except the recipe has flown out of her memory like a flock of little birds. Moustache wants to go fast and mixes everything any old way: flour, salt, pepper, jam. The result is grey, sticky, and tastes of wet sock. Nothing is urgent, nothing is ever urgent, smiles Granny: a good cake will not be hurried, and you do not find a treasure by running.
