The Night the Sleigh Wouldn't Start
Far, far away at the very edge of the world, where the snow falls so softly it makes less noise than a secret, there stands a great wooden house tucked under a thick quilt of snow: the North Pole workshop. And tonight is THE night, the biggest of the whole year, Christmas night. The little elf Pim wraps the very last present, wrestling with a ribbon that keeps tying itself into knots, while Caramel, the young reindeer with a bellyful of butterflies, gets ready for his very first great flight up in the sky. But when Santa climbs onto the big golden wooden sleigh, takes the reins and says his magic word, «Up and away!», something happens that has never happened in a thousand years: the sleigh does not budge. Not an inch, not a runner. Usually it lifts off all by itself, light as a snowflake; tonight it just sits there on the snow, heavy as a big sleeping stone. And ever so quietly, a terrible little sentence creeps through the workshop: «What if Christmas doesn't happen this year?» At once, everyone springs into action. Boucle, the handy little elf, pulls out her checklists and inspects everything: runners polished, bells tuned… all perfect, and yet nothing works. Old Brindille, the oldest elf in the workshop and a little hard of hearing, even tightens «the magic bolt», because, he says, everything has a bolt, even magic! But the sleigh stays silent. It is not a mechanical problem… so what is it? It is Mrs Claus who, without ever panicking, asks the right question, very gently: a Christmas sleigh, deep down, does not fly thanks to the presents, nor thanks to a bolt. It flies thanks to something else. And together, by breathing, by listening to one another and by helping each other out, Pim, Caramel and the elves rediscover the true magic of Christmas, the kind you can't screw in anywhere, and which is enough to lift the heaviest of sleighs. As the story unfolds, your child learns that a big hiccup is not a catastrophe: when you keep calm, take a good deep breath and search together, you always end up finding a way. And when the sleigh finally soars into the starry sky, everything grows peaceful again: the snow falls in silence and the bells chime like a little lullaby, right in time to close your eyes. Mrs Claus never scolds anyone and never laughs at the little elves' panic. She sits down beside them, lets the silence settle, then turns the worry into a gentle question to solve all together: this way of taking an emotion seriously rather than brushing it aside is the whole spirit of Tilibou bedtime stories. And all the while, the old workshop clock keeps up its quiet tick-tock, like a tiny nightlight made of sound, until eyelids grow heavy. A screen-free Christmas story for toddlers from age 2, lovely to share at bedtime, in the car, or at nap time. As always with Tilibou, the ending stays soft and quiet, without music, so your child can drift toward sleep without anyone being startled awake. All the Tilibou bedtime stories at
