The Big Box of Colours

⏱ 12 min · 👶 from age 2

That morning, at Lila's school, a big table is covered with fresh white paper. On it, brushes and pots of colour: red like a strawberry, yellow like the sun, blue like the big gate. Miss Lou claps her hands: «Today is painting day!» All the children cheer «yay!»… all of them, except one. Lila takes a little step back. Because this morning, Lila is wearing a pretty clean dress, with little flowers, that Mum washed and that smells lovely. And paint makes stains! «Miss, I don't want to, I'll get dirty.» Lila looks at the pots of colour as though they were a little dangerous, torn between wanting to paint and fearing to spoil her lovely dress. So Miss Lou offers her a big soft smock, just for her, that protects the dress from shoulders to knees. And little by little, brush in hand, Lila dares. A touch of red, a touch of yellow, a big scribble shaped like a sun… and she discovers the pure joy of creating, no longer thinking about stains at all. This story helps your child let go a little, to accept getting their hands messy for the joy of playing and creating. It also reassures tidy little ones who don't like mess, by showing that with a smock and a bit of confidence, you can have fun without worry. A lovely message about spontaneity and the joy of doing. And when Lila proudly holds up her big, colourful, still slightly sticky drawing, she's delighted, and her pretty dress, well protected, has stayed perfectly clean. The day ends in pride, and the story settles gently down, right in time to close your eyes thinking of all those lovely colours. Miss Lou doesn't make fun of Lila and doesn't force her to paint: she understands her worry and gives her just what she needs, a smock, to dare at her own pace. Helping a little one get past a fear gently, rather than pushing them, is the whole spirit of Tilibou bedtime stories. And in the reading corner, Doudou-Hibou watches the lovely artwork with a tender eye. A gentle, screen-free school story for toddlers from age 2, perfect for easing back-to-school nerves, lovely to share at bedtime, in the car, or at nap time. As always with Tilibou, the ending stays soft and quiet, without music, so your child can drift toward sleep without anyone being startled awake. All the Tilibou bedtime stories at
