Pim Can't Wrap the Presents
A few days before Christmas, the North Pole workshop is running at full tilt. On every table an elf is wrapping presents: snip go the scissors, rustle goes the paper, pop goes the bow. One parcel, then another, then one more. Every elf is quick, every elf is skilful… every one, except one. Little Pim's parcels always look like cauliflowers: the paper crumples like a stormy sea, the corners stick out everywhere, and the ribbon ties a knot in exactly the wrong place. Boucle, the fastest little elf in the workshop, shows him «the Boucle Method»: corner, corner, crisp fold, ribbon taut, sharp bow, five seconds, and there you go! But no matter how hard Pim tries, and he tries very, very hard, his ribbon tangles again, sometimes without him even touching it. And he starts to believe, quite sadly, that he'll never manage, not ever, and that his parcels will always be a mess. Yet by starting over and over, one fold after another, one ribbon after another, Pim finally discovers the great secret of all difficult things: you almost never get it right the first time, and that is perfectly fine. You try, you get it wrong, you begin again a tiny bit better… and one fine day, his hands grow sure, and the bow holds firm. This story helps your child understand that failing is nothing to worry about, and that every try, even a botched one, brings us a little closer to success. It is a precious message about perseverance, about the patience we owe ourselves while learning, and about the great pride we feel the day we finally do it all by ourselves, like a big kid. And when Pim's very first beautiful parcel is finally ready, neat and tidy, proudly set under the tree, the workshop finds its cosy calm again. Pim glows with pride, the elves put away their ribbons, and the story ends peacefully, like a long sigh of satisfaction after a fine day's effort, right in time to close your eyes. Boucle doesn't make fun of Pim's crumpled parcels; she even ends up calling them «artistic», and above all she takes the time to show him, again and again, without ever losing patience. Guiding a little one who is learning instead of doing it for them is the whole spirit of Tilibou bedtime stories. And in the workshop, the stove purrs quietly while the snow falls behind the windowpanes.
