Caramel Is Afraid to Fly in the Dark
At the very back of the North Pole stable, in the stall nearest the nightlight, lives a young caramel-coloured reindeer. It is almost time for the great round: all the big reindeer are stamping, eager to leap into the sky. All of them… except one. Caramel is trembling in his hay, and he has even let his hot chocolate go cold. For tonight, for the very first time, he must fly for real, very high, in the dark. «I'm afraid of the dark, and I'm afraid of the emptiness,» he confides to his friend Pim. «And up there, at night, there's both at once.» Santa, very gently, comes over to his stall. He does not scold him, he does not force him. He simply suggests trying just a little, staying close by, and letting himself be guided by the reassuring light of the stars and of those who love him. So, step by step, hoof after hoof, Caramel learns that you can be very frightened and go ahead anyway. He leaves the ground trembling, then lets himself be carried, and little by little discovers that the great black sky is not so terrible when you are not all alone in it. His fear, ever so gently, turns into wonder. In little Caramel, your child finds all their own evening fears, the ones that grow when the light goes out.
